Republicans are encountering significant challenges in their attempt to pass a voter ID law aimed at ensuring only U.S. citizens vote in federal elections. On Monday, House Republicans introduced funding legislation to finance the government for the next six months, attaching the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act to the bill. The act would require applicants to present proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections.
This push for stricter voter ID laws has been a priority for many Republican voters concerned about election integrity. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., emphasized his commitment to the cause, calling it a "righteous fight" and indicating that there is no backup plan if the legislation fails.
Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, the bill's lead sponsor, echoed the sentiment, stating that standing firm on voter ID laws is crucial for mobilizing voters and securing their trust in the election process. However, the slim Republican majority in the House means any defections could sink the bill. The legislation's fate in the Senate is also uncertain, and passing it seems unlikely.
Opposition within the Republican ranks is also emerging. Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., criticized the bill's attachment to the continuing resolution, calling it an "insult to Americans' intelligence" and expressing doubt that the SAVE Act will be upheld before passage.
Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., have dismissed the bill as a political maneuver, with Schumer suggesting it is more about scoring points than preventing a government shutdown. President Biden has indicated that he would veto the bill, citing existing state-level safeguards that verify voter eligibility.
Currently, 35 states require some form of ID to vote, while 24 require photo identification. The remaining states either require no ID or have more lenient rules. For more details on state-by-state voter registration deadlines and voter ID policies, check out this comprehensive guide here.
