An Israeli airstrike struck a displaced people’s camp in Gaza on Tuesday, in an area that had been designated as a humanitarian zone. According to the Israeli military, the strike targeted a Hamas command center and senior militants in the area. However, Gaza's health ministry reported that at least 19 Palestinians were killed in the attack. This death toll has not been independently confirmed, and Israeli military officials have contested the initial reports regarding the number of casualties.
The United Nations' Middle East peace envoy condemned the airstrike, calling for both Israel and Hamas to agree to a ceasefire and negotiate the return of hostages.
This attack highlights the growing challenges of providing humanitarian aid in Gaza. The ongoing conflict has displaced the vast majority of Gaza's 2.3 million residents, with many forced to relocate multiple times. International relief agencies have issued warnings that the region is on the brink of famine, further complicating the efforts to address the worsening humanitarian situation.
In addition, the United Nations has launched a polio vaccination campaign in Gaza, aiming to curb the spread of the disease amidst the ongoing conflict and displacement.
