Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign is reportedly reworking its debate strategy after an unexpected setback involving the microphone rules for the upcoming debate against former President Donald Trump. The two candidates are set to face off in Philadelphia, with the event moderated by ABC News.

Initially, Harris' team had pushed for unmuted microphones throughout the debate, allowing for direct questioning and fact-checking of Trump while he spoke. This strategy was intended to leverage Harris' prosecutorial background, reminiscent of her Senate hearings, where she aggressively questioned Trump’s Supreme Court nominees and Cabinet members.

However, with the rules now finalized, muting the candidates' microphones while the other is speaking, Harris' advisers are scrambling to adjust. According to Politico, some campaign officials feel this format will "handcuff" Harris and prevent her from engaging Trump in the way they had originally planned.

While some Democrats have expressed frustration with the debate terms, others like strategist James Carville see the situation as neutral. He noted that the new rules would also limit Trump’s typical debate tactics, potentially making it a "wash."

Trump's senior adviser Jason Miller, on the other hand, expressed satisfaction that Harris' team had finally accepted the agreed-upon rules. He emphasized that Americans are eager to hear both candidates share their visions without interruption.

Despite their objections, the Harris campaign formally agreed to the debate rules but maintained that the microphone format puts Harris at a disadvantage by shielding Trump from direct exchanges. The campaign had tried to renegotiate the terms but ultimately had to settle for the original agreement.
