All five parties in Greenland's parliament have come together to issue a clear rejection of President Donald Trump's latest comments regarding Greenland.
The leaders of these parties, following an election held earlier this week, stated:
“We — all party chairmen — cannot accept the repeated statements on annexation and control of Greenland. We, as party chairmen, find this conduct unacceptable to friends and allies in a defense alliance.”
Greenland is a self-governing region of Denmark, which is a NATO ally of the United States. This status adds importance to the recent statements made by the party leaders.
The leaders' statement comes after Trump reiterated his desire to take control of Greenland during a press conference with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. When asked about his ambitions for the island, Trump replied:
“Well, I think it’ll happen. We’ve been dealing with Denmark. We’ve been dealing with Greenland. And we have to do it. We really need it for national security.”
Trump also highlighted the U.S. military presence in Greenland, suggesting that more troops might be stationed there in the future:
“Maybe you’ll see more and more soldiers go there,” he said. “I don’t know.”
Greenland's Prime Minister, Mute B. Egede, has spoken even more forcefully against Trump's remarks. In a statement on Facebook, he declared:
“Our country will never be the USA, and we Greenlanders will never be Americans. Greenland is one country. We are united.”
