China and Canada Relations After Leadership Change

Key Points Covered:

  • Mark Carney becomes the new Prime Minister of Canada.
  • China's stance on improving bilateral relations.
  • Recent tariffs imposed by China on Canadian products.
  • China's response to Canada's trade policies.

Carney's Leadership Win

Mark Carney has been elected as the new leader of Canada's ruling party, securing 86% of the votes. He is set to replace Justin Trudeau, who resigned in January. Notably, Carney has previous experience as a two-time central banker, but he has never held an elected office before.

China's Response

During a press conference, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning congratulated Carney on his election. She emphasized the importance of maintaining mutual respect and equality in bilateral relations between Canada and China. Mao expressed hope that Canada would adopt a positive and pragmatic approach towards China.

Recent Trade Tensions

Carney's victory coincided with China's announcement of tariffs on over $2.6 billion worth of Canadian agricultural and food products. This move is in retaliation for the levies introduced by Canada in October, which include 100% and 25% import duties on Chinese electric vehicles and steel and aluminum products, set to take effect on March 20.

China's Position on Tariffs

Mao defended China's tariffs as "legitimate and reasonable." She called on Canada to amend its "wrong practices" to ensure a fair and predictable environment for trade between the two nations.
